Texting to Learn
Thursday, September 9th, 2010
Where do you land on this issue? Phones or no phones? One high school administrator I’ve talked with recently noted that we need to prepare these students for the real world, and part of that real world is learning how to manage the etiquette of using cell phones in a place of business – a skill we, as adults, are dealing with daily.
“According the the Pew Research Center, even in schools that ban cell phone use, nearly 60% of all students admit texting in class.” (0:40)
“I don’t think we’re going to be able to stop the tsunami.” -Dr. Michael Rich, Director, Center on Media and Child Health (1:26)
In light of the difficulty schools face enforcing present policies, how might these policies be better crafted to deal with the present reality of cell phone use in a way that contributes to a positive school environment and fewer disciplinary issues?

Chad, Maybe it would be good to offer more classes to teachers on effective ways to intergrade the cell phone into the claaa.

Yes, teaching teachers how to integrate internet access via cell phones would be time and money well spent. Who knows, by the time 2014-15 rolls around with the new ELA and Math assessments, the kids may need that knowledge in order to take the new tests!
